YYC Hot Chocolate Fest

Since 2012, the YYC Hot Chocolate Fest has been on the hunt to find Calgary’s Best Hot Chocolate. Participating cafes, restaurants and chocolatiers feature a signature hot chocolate drink for the competition, with the hopes of winning the coveted title and bragging rights.

This delicious and friendly competition not only highlights the skills of various Calgarian cafes, restaurants and chocolatiers, but it is also for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from each hot chocolate purchase is donated to support Calgary Meals On Wheels. The YYC Hot Chocolate Fest has successfully raised over $65,000 for the cause so far.

In previous years, many Vic Park businesses have participated in this annual competition and this year promises to be our strongest showing yet. We’ve pulled together the list of participating Vic Park businesses to make it easier for anyone wanting to test out a few hot chocolates in our neighbourhood!

Utca Chimney Cakes opened in November 2017, and if you haven’t popped into their café yet, now is the time! Their featured hot chocolate is their Chimney Hot Chocolate. That is Ghirardelli chocolate, topped with dulce de leche, cocoa powder, sprinkles, orange zest and, of course, a piece of their signature chimney cake.

Yellow Door Bistro returns once again with a spirited hot chocolate, the Dark Chocolate Blossom. Dark chocolate ganache, Goslings Dark Rum, Benedictine & Brandy, Crème de Banana and a blooming flower marshmallow.

Boxcar Café, a premier board game café in Vic Park, will also be entering again this year! Stop by their shop to try their Gingerbread Hot Chocolate. The perfect drink if you’re a fan of ginger, nutmeg and other seasonal spices.

Waves Coffee House is a hidden gem in Vic Park. You can find their shop at 110 10 Ave SE, on the main level of the Palliser east building. They return this year with a Peach Melba Hot Chocolate – peach and raspberry served over dark chocolate, and topped with raspberry whipped cream and a waffle wafer.

If you’re a fan of chocolate and oranges, you’ll want to stop by Rosso Coffee Roasters! These long-time BIA members are featuring an Orange Blossom Hot Cocoa for the competition. Their beverage offers a unique blend of orange and floral notes, with Deutsch cocoa, an orange zest cookie and a dried orange slice.

Cococo Chocolatiers (Bernard Callebeaut) is the go-to spot in Vic Park for anything chocolate, so it isn’t a surprise that they are participating in this competition once again! This year, their stores will be featuring The Earl of Ginger. An earl grey hot chocolate paired with their dark chocolate ginger bonbon.

The winners are chosen based on the votes and ratings received, which is why it is important to rate each hot chocolate you drink. You can view and rate the different entries here. We will be testing the entries from all of our Vic Park businesses, and encourage you to do the same!
