An inside look at HD Law Group
An avid cycling commuter and co-founder of the HD Law Group, Ryan Hager is a strong believer in the community of Victoria Park. Although he does not live in the area, he and his business partner chose to open the HD Law Firm in Victoria Park, and Ryan sits on the BIAs Board of Directors. He cycles to work almost every single day during the summer, and says that the bike lanes have been a very useful addition to the community as they allow cyclists to avoid the fight with Calgary’s busy traffic.
In 1993, Ryan was accepted to the University of Calgary, and moved here to study psychology. After receiving his undergrad degree, Ryan decided that law school was the right choice for him, believing that it would result in a better career fit. He says that becoming a lawyer was not his original plan, and that he sort-of stumbled into it. For 15 years prior to starting HD Law, Ryan practiced mainly residential and commercial real estate law, though he always hoped to diversify his practice and expand upon his experience in different types of projects.
After working together in another firm, Ryan and his partner, Jason Demers, decided that opening their own firm was something they both wanted to do. With differing areas of experience - Ryan’s real-estate and business law, and Jason’s in litigation - opening a firm as partners would allow them to offer a wide range of services. Today, Ryan and his team work together to create an atmosphere that is competent, yet approachable, non-intimidating and friendly. At HD Law, the focus is to offer good service in a comforting environment for all clients. Ryan and his team understand the intimidation and discomfort that goes along with addressing legal issues, which is why they are committed to ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and stress-free within their offices.
Before settling in Victoria Park, Ryan and Jason looked at spaces in Kensington, 17th Avenue and Midnapore. Although all of these locations were desirable for the two, Vic Park architecture and history stood out to them and they saw the potential the community had. Vic Park’s location on the outskirts of downtown was also a factor in their decision to locate their office here. Between that proximity and Vic Park’s CTrain station (Victoria Park/Stampede Station and the future green line), Ryan believes that the area could easily become a successful entertainment district, especially with the already growing number of highly-rated restaurants and lounges.
Ryan also mentioned that even though HD Law is tucked away in a corner of Victoria Park, their staff is able to enjoy many of the amenities available in the area. As a board member for the Victoria Park BIA, Ryan is an advocate for the community, and is committed to working with members to improve the area so that it can reach its full potential.
